Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO); are defined as vegetable, animal or microorganisms whose some definite features are modified by the transferring of a gene which is outside and different from their own species with biological methods.
The researches whose the first studies start in 1970’s in SSCB, which is a closed society, gained momentum in 1985’s and the growing of these foods have been made since 1996. Today, in the field more than 120 million hectar and initially in 25 countries such as USA, Argentine, Brasil, Canada, India, China; the vegetables and fruits such as soyabean, corn, cotton, canola, potato, tomato, rice, wheat, banana, raspberry, strawberry, cherry, pineapple, pepper, sugar beet, flax, melon, water melon are grown, also some fish species are produced with GDO and they spread around the world.
These products which are named as “transgenic products,” sometimes increase the production two- fold more which are ensured from only one unit, however many scientists and non-governmental organizations state that they do not find these works healthy and ethic, they constitute an against platform.
Because, the tomato which you add in the salad and the corn which you blow may consist of a gene which does not belong to itself. Namely, you presume that you eat tomato or corn, actually you eat a different food which is transferred a gene from an animal or another food.
IS THIS A GREEN REVOLUTION OR A FRANKENSTEIN FOOD?
While many scientists and statesmen including previous USA president George Bush define the GDO foods as “green revolution” to protect the world from the hunger, as for the people who care for the environment, health and the exploitation of agricultural population, renames these foods as “frankenstein foods. “
Many GDO foods are available which are also sold in our country in a way and decorate the shelves in the markets. As there is not a legal obligatory currently, it is not emphasized on their labels if they are with gdo or not, the consumers eat these foods if they want or not. Meanwhile, the specialists who take into consideration of the spiritual and ethic dimension of the issue, draw the attention to the point of that the genes of the animals such as pig could be transferred into the vegetables and fruits and by this way it is acquired a different dimension in the event.
BIO SECURITY COUNCIL IS REQUIRED TO BE ESTABLISHED URGENTLY
On the other hand, the efforts of the production of GDO foods in some regions of our country can be a reflex to the public opinion from time to time. The production of Gdo foods as nearly a“cavy” in some regions of the country disturbs the producers and the public, which have been discussed around the world and havent got an enough infrastructure in our
country yet.
However, even if in the event of giving permission of making this production in legal, as it is not available enough infrastructure, it is emphasized that it would be paid million dollars of exchanges for the seeds of these products every year. In order to resolve the debate about this matter, it is reported that the “National and Independent Bio Security Council” is required to be established urgently so that the gene sources of our country are required to be protected by supporting the
private sector instead of making import.
THE PURPOSE OF THE PRODUCTION
The purposes of the production of GDO foods are explained as follow:
- To increase the productivity, gain more products with less costs.
- To supply the endurance against the diseases and pests,
- To extend the shelf life and storing time of the products.
- The Production of the vaccination and the pharmacologic substances in preventive medicine.
- To provide an income economically.
THE RISKS WHICH IT CARRIES
- It gives harm to the gene sources of the country.
- It can disrupt the ecological balance by leading to the change in the fauna, flora and microorganisms.
- It can trigger the allergic cases.
- It can cause the decrease in the quality of the foods.
- It can increase the risk of cancer.
- It creates resistance against the antibiotics in the body.
- The toxins(poison) can be accumulated in the foods which are produced by this method.
- It can make negative effect on DNA.
